Ask your state to look into their state's CAFR  for the funds. In actuality, CAFR monies could be the vehicle to stand behind redeemability for state sovereign gold and silver coinage. Then abolish state CAFRs.

Forty-eight states currently have budget shortfalls. The common strategy being dictated in many of these states and in Washington is to call for budget cuts, eliminating important safety nets for the middle-class and those below the poverty line, as well as to repeal legislation guaranteeing collective bargain rights for unions. It’s as if the states and the federal government were corporations with no responsibility to their real stockholders, the citizens of the U.S.

However, 20 states have decided enough is enough; they have introduced legislation for publicly owned banks or derivations, or for studies or task forces to determine how a publicly owned bank would operate in their jurisdiction. Three of these states have bills that were submitted in 2012 -- thirteen states had bills submitted in 2011. Colorado has an innovative initiative.

We are currently seeking state coordinators in some of these states and other states. State coordinators are volunteers who ascribe to the Public Banking Institute's mission and who actively organize their state communities and serve as a point of contact for public banking developments in their respectives states. State Coordinators provide the information on this web page to Public Banking Institute, so it is as current as the information they have.

PBI State Volunteer Coordinator

He or she needs to understand the urgency of the task, the value of public banking, be an effective communicator and willing to put the time in, raise money and spread the word. It would be helpful if he or she understood how the state and local government work and had ever spoken to a state legislator or local political leader.

Minimum Requirement - nonpartisan, authentic interest/passion about the subject, and a desire to know who is doing what in your state relative to public banking legislation. Setup meetings with State Legislators. Setup meetings with State Treasurer. If state constitution prohibits state owned bank, begin working with municipalities to setup municipal or county owned banks. Write for your local paper. Participate in 1x/mo calls with the other state coordinators (they occur the last wed of every month, 9pm eastern). Receive inquiries and respond to other residents re. who is doing what in your state, etc.
