English-speaking Canadians agree that it’s time for Quebec to leave Canada.
According to a recent National Post article by Paul Russell, two-thirds of the letters sent in to the question of ‘Does Quebec have a future in Canada?’ answered in the negative. Those readers repeatedly mentioned several reasons why Quebec should be independent: its separate culture and language, its allegedly big government style of politicians and government (as opposed to the allegedly small government tendencies of non-Quebecers – this is a country with tight gun control, socialised healthcare and no freedom of speech) and the economic benefits that non-Quebecers believe they might receive. In comparison, the anti-independence readers assert mostly emotional and historical ties between Quebec and Canada.Indeed, heated emotion can be found in many of the letters. However, the most well-considered and reasonable sounding letters definitely appear to be those in favour of Quebec’s independence.
