Following the conquest of the independent South by the United States in 1865, former Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned for two years without trial. The story of his imprisonment and subsequent release is fairly well-known. What is less known is his stay in Quebec and his family’s connections there. An SNN reader and Quebec nationalist has kindly shared several documents with us which shed some light on this. We will post these documents over the next few days.
The first document is an article taken from the Journal of Mississippi History in 1971. It describes Davis’ post-war life, focusing on his time in Canada. Readers will note the stress and hardship endured by his family and also the attention given to his daily activities and support from many local people while in Quebec.
The documents come from Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Quebec, where Davis stayed.
